Months ago, prior to our move, Garrett and I made a decision which, little did we know, would get pushed to the back burner week after week once we settled in…One of the many “welcome to home-ownership” moments I actually enjoy; the ability to modify said home to our desire, which includes finally being able to paint the walls without consequence or having to paint them back at the end of a lease. Not to mention, the choices are endless! Which, you know, is great for someone like me who has immense difficulty making decisions…I mean, what if we choose one color and then end up finding something better later?! The grass is always a prettier green on the other chip, or something like that…Needless to say, poor Garrett had to sit there for quite some time while I poured over the paint chips trying to find just the right grey to pair with the gorgeous purple he chose. I kind of felt like Goldilocks…This grey is too yellow, this one is too red, until finally I located the perfect one with a beautiful blue undertone…and then he had to endure it all over again while I sought out a color pair for the spare room that subtly says “coastal escape.” You know you’ve got a keeper when he’ll stand by, offering his opinion when prompted, as you dig through endless rows of paint chips donning a mask in the hot and humid atmosphere of Home Depot! The trip proved worthwhile though as we triumphantly approached the mixing area armed with our chosen colors and proper bases! It’s all about that base, honey!
With the paint safely stashed in our buggy, we were ready to begin the waiting process until we could finally move into our home and start all of the exciting alterations we had planned, one at a time. Cause, you know me, I like doing one project at a time…Am I convincing enough? Thought not…Oh well, was worth a shot!
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when a specific weekend approached that we had selected to be the designated painting weekend. We were going to do it. We were going to paint the master bedroom, saying good bye to the plain, white walls and hello to chic, romantic ambiance! Early Saturday morning we woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed, or at least we pretended to be, and set to work moving the furniture out of the way and covering the floor with the flimsy plastic protective sheets we purchased. In this case, dear friends, I am afraid I must admit that you get what you pay for…Get the cheaper plastic sheet and you’ll rip it quickly when it clings to the bottom of the leg on your ladder while you try to move it…I took to the ladder with the edge paintbrush my mom so helpfully suggested, painting along the ceiling, floor, and around outlets while Garrett grabbed the roller and finished off the rest of the wall behind me. Teamwork makes the dream work! One coat down, with only a few casualties on the ceiling and a side wall (which, coincidentally, always trick me into thinking there’s a giant bug on the wall now…) and it was time for a brief break to allow our masterpiece to dry.
A couple of hours later and we were able to apply the second, and thankfully final, coat. Just in time too! We were quickly approaching dinner preparation time, and our favorite meal was on the menu… So back to work we went, finishing up the wall. Unfortunately for us, there was not enough time in the day for us to finish the other walls due to prior commitments, so the rest of the painting would have to wait until next weekend. And then the next weekend…and the next…Okay you caught me. We still haven’t gotten to the other walls yet. But we will!
With the final coat applied, we set off to prepping a delicious dinner; low country boil! I tell you what, that grill was one of the best gifts I’ve ever given. Up until now, we’ve had to make our favorite meal in foil packets in the oven, but no more! Now we can enjoy this treat fresh off the grill, just like my dad makes it. There was even a cute little surprise in our batch of potatoes; one shaped almost like a heart! Even Sterling wanted in on the dinner. Sorry buddy, low country boil isn’t for puppers…What a great way to end such a productive day.
Fast forward again to today. No…we didn’t finish painting the room, way to rub it in! Back when I lived in the apartment I had set up a canopy around my bed and absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, I had not gotten around to redoing it after upgrading the bed from a full to a king, so I was excited at the potential for adding it to the master room here.
Much to my dismay though, there is a ceiling fan smack dab in the middle of the room, so no matter what orientation we do for the furniture in the room, it will always be in the way of a canopy. I searched and searched for one that only covered the top half of the bed, but the only option was the canopies that drape around the head of the bed and go up to a hoop hanging from the ceiling, so I caved and attempted to make this work. I was not pleased, and neither was Garrett. Down it came and back to scouring the internet for me. Eventually I came up with a plan to just rig one ourselves with sheer curtains, which I purchased on Amazon, and then we measured the bed before heading out to Target to get a curtain rod. I also happened to have a curtain of string lights I purchased previously for this purpose, so my imagination set off and excitement returned. Garrett hung the braces over the bed for me as I prepped the rod, alternating a curtain clip ring and a section of the lights all the way down. Once the rod was completed, he hung it up for me and I couldn’t be more pleased with this decision! I can’t wait until we finish painting the other walls and the entire room is complete!
As for the old ring canopy I bought, it ended up having its use! I’ve put it up in the corner of the room where we had a chair to start a little reading nook. Put on your imagination caps ladies and gents: Replace the chair in the image below with a papasan chair, and then add a chic little book shelf with a beautiful lamp on it between the windows. Maybe even toss in a little rug? It’s going to be so great when we’re done! Silly Sterling, photo-bombing mommy…Also ignore the white sheet makeshift cushion cover…the cushion is leather, which makes a lot of noise and has begun shedding (bet you thought Sterling was the only thing shedding in this house!) so I wrapped it in a sheet until I can get an actual cover for it.
BEFORE AND AFTER REVEAL:
While there is still a long ways to go in the master bedroom, it’s coming along quite nicely. Keep your eyes open in the future for when we finally finish it! I’ll be sure to post the before and after photos again at a later date. Unfortunately for the progress of this room, we have quite a few wedding venue tours lined up over the next few weekends, so wrapping this project up is probably still in the more distant than I’d like future…But that’s how it goes!
